A sorceress with no magic. A stolen crystal that holds the key to her future. And in a court of royals…a treacherous fate she can’t escape.
Seventeen-year-old Violet Winthrope is destined to marry a nobleman, if her father has anything to say about it, and he usually does. But Violet yearns for more out of life than being a wife and mother. She dreams of being a powerful sorceress.
The problem is she has no magic.
Until the day she stumbles upon a fragment of a crystal that appears to have stars inside. Enthralled, Violet is compelled to steal it from her father’s study and keeps it hidden on her person.
When her father is suddenly called to court as the king’s royal sorcerer, he packs her up and heads to the castle. Nothing has prepared her for the treachery, machinations, and deceptions thrown at her in the royal court.
When the crystal she’s been hiding suddenly springs to life, responding to her every whim, Violet's dreams of becoming a powerful sorceress seem to be within her grasp. Or will her ultimate power prove to be her ultimate destruction?

I don’t know why I noticed that, but I did. I know I’ve read books that have taken place in a short period of time before, but I guess it hasn’t happened lately. So, from that expect a lot to happen rather quickly. Even with that said, it does feel like some parts were a little slow for me. And that may just be because the dad was being unreasonable. Then the daughter was making some questionable decisions when it came to messing with magic. And they honestly they were not slow at all, I just didn’t want to read them.So many times she should have told her dad what was going on with what was happening to her and what she was finding out. But she didn’t. Drama was happening without her extra and she could have made better choices and we could still have gotten an entertaining story.I knew the piano teacher would be part of this story before we knew he was going to be a teacher of anything. Him I like. At one point I thought we were going to end up with two suitors, not counting that guy that came to her house at the start of this story. When the war was about to kick off I was starting to fear that the story wasn’t a standalone, and I didn’t want to see how many more bad decisions would be made to cliffhanger us for the next book. Then in the last few chapters of the book we wrap everything up and even included a little time jump.Seriously, the girl shouldn’t be marrying anyone. Yes, yes, she’s/they are in love and yes the war thing is behind them and the magic thing is being addressed, but she did a lot of questionable things that showed she still needed to grow up. I’m not knocking on her happy ending I just wish she was a bit … older. I think she’s like 16 here. She might be 17 by the time of the wedding. It’s a small gripe that is far more relevant in the rest of the story. It doesn’t matter by the end of the book. But the big question. Over all did I like the story? I didn’t hate the story and parts of it were really interesting.
This is the first book I have read by Michelle Miles and boy did it captivate me! So much goes on in this young woman's life, her father is a sorcerer, but she has no magic, he also forbids her to try. There is much hidden from her about her past. Her father wanting her to be taken care of tries to get her to marry, she keeps turning people down, the most recent is a terrible person and very old. War is brewing between her kingdom and other ones. When the royal sorcerer dies mysteriously; her father is called to court to take his place and his daughter goes with him. That is when the real adventure begins. This is a stand alone book, so you can pick it up. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and honestly until the end was not sure how it would end. I highly recommend this book for those who like fantasy and magic. So get it and happy reading!
I really enjoyed this one as it is different from mainstream fantasy romance novels. It was cute and sweet with great characters and a lovely romance.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
We have a story for Teens up to adults. We have mystery, adventure, and more. This is Violet's story. She wants to be a sorceress and not marry. Could she get her wish or will her father stop it? What will she do when she finds the crystal? What will happen when she goes to the castle with her father?.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
